Assassinations and police brutality did not end with apartheid. There are modern day Steve Bikos, Ruth Firsts, and Ashley Kriels. Sadly, these continue to this day. The recent killings of Abahlali BaseMjondolo activists, oftentimes with collusion or direct involvement of some within the South African Police Services continues unabated. It’s time for the Minister of Police to launch a Commission of Inquiry and set up a task to to tackle these killings. Such actions do not belong in a democratic society.
PAIS co-founder Phillip Dexter has set up a change.org petition. We are lobbying for the South African Minister of Police to set up the inquiry and task teams needed to quash this aberration that has taken hold in South Africa.
